Becoming a Student Pt Two

In this part of your student training, we’ll be talking about rounding out all of your poker online games. Sure you may have Texas Hold ‘Em online poker locked down, but what if you get invited into a game of PL Omaha or 7-Stud with a bunch of fish business men, and you don’t know how to play well? Well you’d be losing a lot of expected value (-EV). So this is just a reminder to learn all the online poker games. Just about every site out there has play or practice money, so why not hit up some of these practice money games and start to learn how to play them well. You don’t have to master them, just learn to play them well enough to get by if you’re invited into a fish barrel and want to be the shark at the table. See it’s not enough to just know Hold ‘Em and nothing else. Everybody is getting on the hold’em train. And it’s not just enough in Hold ‘Em to know ring game play, as tournaments and SnGs are all part of the money to be made out there as well. So once you’ve started your mastery of a certain game, you need to move on and learn all the forms of poker. This way, when you do get that opportunity to take some money from some fish, you’ll be more than prepared. Remember, not just hold ‘em, but all forms of poker are games of people played with cards. So get yourself ready for that next HOSE or HORSE tournament, and make yourself some money, since when you’re jumping into these you will know how to play and play well.

Poker Pros Are a Slower Breed

I am an amateur poker player. As such, I value and look for a very specific set of criteria in my poker games. Most of all, I look for a table where the action is hot and the stakes are high. Like many of you out there, I am an adrenaline junkie who plays online poker for the thrills and roller coaster adrenaline levels. There is something about a quick game that just makes my blood pulse. This is why I will never be a professional poker player.

Let me explain, professional poker online players notoriously play a slower game. They sit there and think about their options. They weigh the odds. They deliberate. All of these mental acrobatics take time. More specifically, these mental acrobatics take time away from the game. The fast paced game that I enjoy is shunned by professional players. They like a slower pace. Add to that the fact that professionals tend to fold half of their cards and you can see how the speed of an average professional poker game slows to a snail’s pace. Before you even think about going pro, consider how a slower pace would affect your enjoyment of the game. Could you play in slow motion? I know I couldn’t.

Top Rated Parlor Games

1. Virtual Pool 3 - The series made its debut in 1997, and ever since it has been steadily improving. There’s a great tutorial session where virtual sponsor and WPBA player Jeanette “The Black Widow” Lee will teach you the basics of pool, along with a few tricks thrown in for good measure. Players looking for a quick game should try the Quick Play mode. However, if it’s a tournament of Snooker you’d prefer, the Tournament mode is easy to set-up. You can also connect to the Internet and face off against real-life opponents in single matches or tournaments. There’s even a career mode, where you rise up from humble beginnings and attempt to become the greatest pool player in the world. With 21 types of pool and a sophisticated physics engine, Virtual Pool 3 is the best pool sim on the market.

2. Pokemon Pinball: Ruby and Sapphire - Pokemon Pinball challenges you to rack up as big a score as you can, allowing you to catch over 200 different types of cute little Pokemons. These creatures are all listed in you Pokedex, and the only way to bag them is to bring the various creatures out in the open and hit them multiple times with your ball. To make things more difficult, some creatures can only be obtained by “evolving” them, and this adds a whole new level of gameplay. The best pinball engine available for the Game Boy Advance, Pokemon Pinball will delight children of all ages (and, yes, that includes people in their thirties).

3. Metroid Prime Pinball - Fans of interstellar bounty hunter Samus Aran and her series of Metroid action adventure games know that her power suit is capable of rolling up into a spherical morph ball. Samus in morph-ball form becomes the pinball in Metroid Prime Pinball, and you get the pleasure of knocking her around a half-dozen different tables, earning big points, and bumping off some of her more infamous foes in the process. The physics of the game are solid, behaving just like a pinball game should. Of course, there are plenty of Metroid touches thrown in (for example, when Samus comes out of morph-ball mode and opens fire on her enemies). There are several modes of play, the controls are easy, and the sound is great (featuring remixes of several classic Metroid themes). The game is challenging enough to present the player with hours of fun, but it’s also quick enough to be played for a few minutes at a time.

4. The Pinball of the Dead - Another pinball title for the Game Boy Advance, Pinball of the Dead allows you to take on the undead on three scrolling multi-tiered tables. The physics are excellent, and the ball is easy to follow during gameplay. The graphics are crisp, detailed, and your undead opponents really come to life (or is it un-life?). The game also features crazy sound effects, and some traditional rock tunes. If you like your pinball games a bit offbeat, give Pinball of the Dead a try.

Justifying the Call

Often many times in a single online poker session you will find yourself facing a tough decisionput to the test against a player who could make equal arguments for folding to, calling, and sometimes even raising. Making the right decision in these spots more often is vital to the vitality of the session. Sometimes the act of calling is a thing you have to talk yourself into. It’s not always a clear spot, and so in the practice of figuring out the right move, some of which depends on gut instinct and numbers, but also just as much can depend on the history of a poker player. In middling spots, having paid close attention to your opponents’ previous action is vital to your understanding of where you’re at. Without that history, though, you can use general rules of thumb and percentages to guesstimate what the right move is. What percent of the time is my opponent bluffing in this spot? What range of casino online hands might he have that beat me that he could have played as he did? How often do I have to be right in calling here via pot odds and the value of my hand for the call to be justified? The whole hand adds up to a picture.

Online Poker Player Types: the Multitabler

It takes a player of a certain kind of breed and consideration to be capable of playing more than one poker table at a time. Because of the necessity of tending to several things at once inherent in the task of multitabling, the multitabler is by definition going to often be tighter, more disciplined, and more efficiently oriented online poker player than those whose attentions focus on one table at a time.

Though it doesn’t necessarily mean that these players are incapable of stealing, you will likely see that more often than not they have a hand. Because the increased influx of cards means they will have to be more picky about those they invest time in, you are less likely to see these players bluffing. Especially when they are putting a significant amount of their stack on the table, you can expect that in order to prevail, you will need a large hand.

Thus, you can learn a lot about an online poker player immediately by checking to see how many tables he is seated at. If it’s two or more, adjust your game toward them accordingly. Players seated at more than 3 or 4 tables, well, you can probably guess that these guys are experienced beyond the average, and you might want to be careful about getting into hairy pots with them.

Developing a Variety of Poker Skills

Nobody wants to be a one trick pony. In poker en ligne, you can do the same thing over and over with a routine amount, but not only will it get boring to you, your more savvy opponents are going to pick up on it. Changing up your jeux de casino is an important part of the method, and vital to survival when you are returning to a field of players who will catalog your moves.

On the same token, learning new poker online games, and different methodologies for those games, seems vital to the education of a poker player who is serious about his poker career. Skill sets from Omaha, such as tightening your play, and recognizing the variable combinations of the board, can contribute greatly to the mind of your other poker games, as in hold em.

In the mind of expanding your abilities, then, it is important to switch up not only your game, but also the kinds of games you are good at. While you don’t want to necessarily be erratic, you want to be able to keep the pace, and keep your opponent on their toes so that they won’t know quite what to expect from you. The player who is good at all poker variations is much more intimidating than the guy who just got excited about hold em from TV, so in the spirit, learn to be a better player, in all walks.

How to Play Caribbean Stud Poker

Caribbean stud poker online is actually just a variation of a classic five card draw casino poker game. The main difference is that you play against the dealer instead of your fellow poker players. That’s really the biggest adjustment for players that are new to the game. If you can quiet your urge to try to bluff and outsmart your fellow players, than Caribbean Stud Poker should be easy for you to master.

Just like in most other poker varieties, players first place an ante. Then the dealer deals out all the cards and flips one of his own face up on the table. Based on this single card showing, the other players need to decide whether to fold or stay in the game. This is where your strategy would come into play. If you want to stay in a Caribbean Stud Poker game at this point, you need to place a bet that is twice as much as the ante.

Then, the player turns over his hand. If you are holding card s with a higher value than the dealer- you win! (It’s simple, I know, but very effective) Remember that you are playing against the dealer, not the other players, so there can be more than one winner in each round.

Gus Hansen Tv & Durrrr Poker Challenge

I was reading a story about one of Gus Hansen’s latest challenges, one oddly enough, that did not involve poker. He challenged fellow Dane Theo Jorgensen to a boxing match. Apparently Gus rode in on a wheelchair while “Do you really want to hurt me?” by the Culture Club played in the arena. His comedy seemed ironically ill-placed, as he evidently lost the fight. But as I read on, I noticed that the fight aired for free on gushansentv.com. So I went there and found Gus delivering live play by play (through a recording) of him playing heads up against Tom “Durrrr” Dwan.

This is probably from before Durrrr made is 3-1 challenge. They are playing $500/$1000 PLO. They sit down and before any poker cards are dealt, you can see the difference in the two players’ styles and approaches. Gus sits down with $50,000 in (50BB) and Durrrr sits with 3x that, $150,000 (150BB).

It’s nice to see Hansen take the full amount of time in this heads up match. He is describing his thoughts at each step, but by taking the time to do this aloud, he is considering every possibility. This step might be overlooked without an audience. Interestingly enough though, after he takes a big loss he tends to play more quickly and not take the same amount of time he’d been taking. I’m not sure if this is strange to Durrrr, that now all of a sudden Gus is playing fast, but it feels strange when viewing it.

Gus bought in for $50,000 and reloaded twice after getting felted. When he got back to even, he said he was still a little uncomfortable. They both now have $150,000 on the table, but now Gus is responsible for all of it, and not just $50,000 at a time. With these deep stacks, there have been a lot more large river bets.

“I’m having a hard time believing that Durrrr had the nuts again,” mutters Hansen. “He has turned over the nuts quite a couple of times in this short session.”

Now, Gus is upset with some “bad calls” that he has been making on the river, but he did always have monster 2nd nuts hands.

Example: Hansen had Kx 8h 9x 3h Durrr had Q J X X Board - 7h Jd Jh Xx Qh

Also, a comforting thing to see is that Full Tilt is only raking 50 cents a hand…from tens of thousands of dollar pots. Just because the players are playing high, does not change the amount the website takes each poker hand.

This is definitely an interesting watch, and you get a good feel for PLO and how it is played at high stakes (as Gus refers to it, not a game for people with a weak heart). When the video was over the stacks were about 200k (Hansen) to 100k (durrrr).
